Global Talent Visa

The Global Talent visa allows individuals over 18 to live and work in the UK without sponsorship if they are recognised as leaders or emerging leaders in academia or research, arts and culture, or digital technology. This route leads to indefinite leave to remain (otherwise known as ‘settlement’).

About this service

The Global Talent visa allows holders to live and work in the UK for up to 5 years at a time with their dependants (partner and children).

It does not have a minimum salary, language requirement, sponsorship or a job offer requirement.

And, visa holders can be an employee, self-employed and a director of a company and can change or stop doing their job without telling the Home Office.

The Global Talent visa is both for prestigious award recipients and those who can prove their promise, competence and accolades in the following fields as a potential leader:

Academia and Research

  • Active researcher in an academic industry or a government research institution
  • Includes science, medicine, engineering, humanities and social science

Arts and Culture

  • Combined arts (dance, literature, music, theatre or visual arts)
  • Film and TV, including animation, post production and visual effects
  • Fashion design
  • Architecture

Digital Technology

  • Financial technology
  • Gaming
  • Cyber security
  • Artificial intelligence

These areas are not comprehensive, but they are examples to provide a snapshot of occupations relevant to the route.

For a comprehensive list of industry prizes, please check the Home Office’s Global Talent eligible prize lists page.

Applicants who do not hold an eligible prize must first apply for an endorsement from an approved body before applying for the Global Talent visa. Typically, they are covered by discipline through Arts Council England, Tech National, or any that cover science, engineering, humanities, social science and medicine.

The list of approved endorsing bodies is available on the Home Office website. Endorsement decisions take around 2 weeks for academic or research jobs, and this duration is increased to 5 weeks if an application is peer reviewed.

The visa can be renewed, and depending on the way you were granted the visa, you may be eligible to apply for indefinite leave to remain (ILR) after 3 years, instead of the standard 5, depending on the endorsement route and meeting all requirements.

In addition, an individual fellowship or a research grant approved by UK Research and Innovation can also make an applicant eligible for the route.

Global Talent visa holders cannot apply for most public funds (‘benefits’), or work as a sportsperson.

Fees:

The overall application fee for the visa is £766, and applicants pay in different ways depending on what merit they will make the application under.

Those who rely on an endorsement pay £561 when applying for the endorsement, and pay the remainder (£205) when they apply for the visa. In the case of applying directly through presenting an eligible prize win, the £766 is paid in full when applying for the visa.

Separate from main applicants, partners and children are required to pay £766 per person to apply.
