Child Student Visa

As a replacement to the Tier 4 (child) student visa, the Child Student visa is available for those aged between 4 and 17 years old who wish to study at an independent school in the UK.

About this service

Eligibility requirements:

To be eligible for this visa, the child must be aged in the above bracket and have an unconditional course offer of a place within a licensed educational institution. The institution that accepts the child must also provide a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS), which can cover both the pre-sessional course and the main study’s durations. However, it should be noted that foundation courses that prepare students for direct entry to higher education institutions are barred under this route.

Applicants must also prove they will be able to financially support themselves and pay for their education, and provide consent of a parent or guardian to study in the UK.

A list of the said licensed institutions can be found here.

You can begin the application process 6 months before the start of the course from outside the UK and the average time to hear a decision is around 3 weeks. If applying from within the UK, the course must begin within 28 days of the current visa expiring, and a decision is usually made within 8 weeks.

Compatible Courses:

Courses provided by the abovementioned independent schools that teach under the following guidelines are generally accepted for Child Student visa contexts:

  • Teaching the national curriculum
  • Providing education at the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF) level 3 or below
  • Independent school education inspection standards

Furthermore, courses that are at the same academic level as the Office for Standards in Education (Ofsted), Education Scotland, Estyn (Wales) and Education and Training Inspectorate (Northern Ireland).

Validity Period:

After hearing a decision, the length of time you will be allowed to stay is dependent on your age at the time of your application.

Under 16s: Course length (up to 6 years) and an additional 4 months.

16-17-year-olds: Course length (up to 3 years) and an additional 4 months.

Following the expiry of this visa, you may be eligible to extend your visa to continue your studies.

Studying at an independent school is allowed, and if the child is 16 or over, they can work part-time during their term for up to 10 hours per week, full-time during vacations, and on work placements as part of their course (but not for more than 50% of the course duration).
