EU Settlement Scheme

If you’re from the EU, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein, you and your family might be able to apply to the EU Settlement Scheme to continue living in the UK.

About this service

The deadline for most people to apply to the EU Settlement Scheme was 30 June 2021.

Eligibility:

You can still apply through the scheme if you or a family member were living in the UK by 31 December 2020. You must also either:

  1. Meet one of the criteria for a later deadline to apply.
  2. Have ‘reasonable grounds’ for not applying by 30 June 2021.
  3. Submit the relevant application.

In certain situations, you can apply after 30 June 2021 if you’re joining a family member who was living in the UK by 31 December 2020.

In these circumstances, your deadline will be based on when you arrive in the UK, as long as:

  1. You were their family member by 31 December 2020 (this does not apply to children born or adopted after this date), and
  2. The family relationship still exists when you apply.

You can also apply if you can show ‘reasonable grounds’ (such as medical reasons or being the victim of domestic abuse) for why you did not apply by 30 June 2021.

The Home Office now applies a stricter policy to late applications. You must provide clear evidence of your ‘reasonable grounds’ if these are not accepted, your application may be rejected as invalid without a right of appeal.

Status Granted:

You can seek either:

  1. Settled Status, usually where you’ve lived in the UK for a continuous 5-year period (known as ‘continuous residence’), or
  2. Pre-Settled Status, where you’ve lived in the UK for less than 5 years.

Fees:

There is no fee to apply to the EU Settlement Scheme.
