Indefinite Leave to Remain for Members of Armed Forces

You may be able apply for indefinite leave to remain or settlement if have served in the armed forces of the UK. This would give you the right to live, work and study in the UK for as long as you’d like, and can be used to apply for Citizenship.

Eligibility

You would need to:

  • Be leaving the armed forces or have left in the past 2 years
  • Have served for a minimum of 4 years

Eligibility for Family Members

Your partner or child could also apply if you’re currently in the armed forces and have served for a minimum of 5 years or have left in the past 2 years. You must prove you and your partner intend to live together and have a combined income of at least £18,600 per year.

You’ll need to earn an additional:

  • £3,800 for your first child
  • £2,400 for each child thereafter

Fees

It usually costs £2,404 for each person applying, but this can be waived by the Home Office, if certain conditions are met.

Gurkhas

You can apply if you have:

  • left the Brigade of Gurkhas before 1 July 1997
  • served for at least 4 years

Your partner (only one) and any children under 18 can also apply.  The widow of a former Gurkha could apply if her husband met the criteria.
